Meristems: The Root of Stem Cell Regulation
نویسنده
چکیده
The stem cells from which the plant body develops are located in shoot and root meristems, and new research shows that the balance between proliferation and differentiation in each is controlled by related proteins that interact in a similar feedback network.

Plant Meristems: The Fiendish SU DOKU of Stem-Cell Maintenance
Three recent studies have uncovered effector mechanisms and novel pathways in the regulation of the dynamic changes to cell behaviour that occur in plant meristems. The results show how exquisite regulation of cell-cycle mechanisms is central to root stem cell homeostasis.
متن کاملUnique Cellular Organization in the Oldest Root Meristem
Roots and shoots of plant bodies develop from meristems-cell populations that self-renew and produce cells that undergo differentiation-located at the apices of axes [1].The oldest preserved root apices in which cellular anatomy can be imaged are found in nodules of permineralized fossil soils called coal balls [2], which formed in the Carboniferous coal swamp forests over 300 million years ago...
متن کاملIdentification of a putative molecular regulator of cork cambium
Background Cork oak (Quercus suber) is a long-living species of the Fagaceae family that highly contributes for the economy of several countries such as Portugal. It is the only plant species with a phellogen capable of a sustainable production of cork with properties suited for industry applications. Phellogen, or cork cambium, usually initiates in the subepidermis and differentiates during th...
متن کاملA Signaling Module Controlling the Stem Cell Niche in Arabidopsis Root Meristems
The niches of the Arabidopsis shoot and root meristems, the organizing center (OC) and the quiescent center (QC), orchestrate the fine balance of stem cell maintenance and the provision of differentiating descendants. They express the functionally related homeobox genes WUSCHEL (WUS) and WOX5, respectively, that promote stem cell fate in adjacent cells. Shoot stem cells signal back to the OC by...
متن کاملCLAVATA-WUSCHEL signaling in the shoot meristem.
Shoot meristems are maintained by pluripotent stem cells that are controlled by CLAVATA-WUSCHEL feedback signaling. This pathway, which coordinates stem cell proliferation with differentiation, was first identified in Arabidopsis, but appears to be conserved in diverse higher plant species. In this Review, we highlight the commonalities and differences between CLAVATA-WUSCHEL pathways in differ...
